January 6 Hearings: Seventh Hearing on Investigation of January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol
In her closing statement of the seventh January 6 Committee, Committee Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) said that former President Trump “tried to call a witness in our investigation. A witness you have not yet seen in these hearings,” and that the matter had been reported to the Justice Department. The witnesses were Jason Van Tatenhove, former spokesperson for the Oath Keepers extremist group, who said the group is a “violent militia” and "the best illustration for what the Oath Keepers are happened January 6 when we saw that stacked military formation going up the stairs of our Capitol, and Stephen Ayres, who pled guilty to breaching the U.S. Capitol. Mr. Ayres said that he was galvanized by the former president’s January 6 speech and that he went to the Capitol because the president told his supporters to do so. The hearing also includes video testimony from former White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and attorney Sidney Powell, among several others.

Al Franken, a comedian, discussed the cable comedy network, Comedy Central. He explained the background behind Comedy Central’s coverage of the Democratic National Convention in New York City in which Mr. Franken wouldl provide humorous commentary during live coverage of the convention. Mr. Franken also talked about his own background in comedy, “Saturday Night Live,” and comic, political impersonations. He performed his impersonation of Paul Tsongas. Earlier that year, “Saturday Night Live” performed two parodies of C-SPAN’s election coverage. Video clips of the Comedy Central set were shown and Mr. Franken humorously responded to the C-SPAN callers.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced 12 indictments against Russian intelligence officers for conspiring to interfere with the 2016 U.S. election. The Russian officials were charged with hacking Democratic email accounts and with stealing information from approximately 500,000 American voters. The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury in Washington, DC and presented by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office.

President Trump delivered remarks in the Rose Garden, announcing he had signed into law the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, as well as an executive order that would end U.S. preferential treatment for Hong Kong. The move came in the wake of new Chinese laws that experts said would restrict individual freedoms and undermine the autonomy of Hong Kong. Despite the event being billed as a Rose Garden news conference, the president spent the majority of his remarks criticizing his 2020 presidential rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. President Trump took questions from reporters after his remarks.
