i'm pretty sure she knows the russian guy since she the time she lived in alaska, so like over half a decade ago. from what i gather they just had an ongoing hot/cold thing and occasionally fucked each other, especially when she got manic episodes. she seems to taken her relationship with him very seriously at the end though, which explains why they both went bonkers when she cheated/split
