How I see it, they are the victims of their own superstitions and autism, and OCD.
They were (are) those weirdos among normies, who were (are) incapable of compromises and lack any compassion towards other human beans. And every once in a while they get a genius idea, that they can really do X or Y by adding some more weird crap, disregarding the environment. And when they are told that they are weirdos, they reply: "but we just this, and we just that", while continuing being a weirdo.
So they were easy to be blamed things that was out of the ordinary and was detrimental and/or spooky to the normies around them. And, well, some of those things they actually did too, because, some of them aren't just autists obsessing with a loony hobby, but suffer from David-complex and opt with standing up to the man. And things go really sideways at this point.
