Windows was probably used as a botnet since about Windows XP. The question is: by whom? Ever since hackers and script kiddies figured out they could hijack remote computers (usually by malware) and collectively use them for stuff there has been botnets.

I use Ubuntu, didn't know about forced updates. I see updates sometimes and click "remind me later" until I want to install them. Perhaps if I click that enough it would eventually just force it.
