90% of the youth today under the age of 30 only seem to know what's on their smartphones, at least that is my experience with some of them. Not saying all of them are dumb, some of them do better than I did in school, but they are definitely distracted by their gadgets and always seem to need some kind of new online stimulation.

>>41962
You must be a rare exception. If you can manage one day completely offline, and be able to hang out with friends IRL offline, congrats, you are very mature for your typical age group.

I'm not a gamer so I can't speak for video games, but older computers work just fine depending what operating systems you run on them, and how you use them. I have an old PC running Windows XP even today, I use it to store my personal files offline. I don't have any bloatware on it and I can still run a bunch of programs and rip CDs or DVDs with it and use up about 10% CPU max. Since it doesn't go online it won't be vulnerable to viruses, control freaks at Microsoft can't get to it remotely and fuck it up, hackers can't get into it, blah.

As for
>computers are way better now

The hardware is much better today. The operating systems today ARE NOT BETTER AT ALL!!!' Newer operating systems are full of unnecessary bloatware that need unnecessary routine updating and endless "patches" that don't make it any less vulnerable. I totally disagree with you on that statement, the programmers today suck ass. I would totally stick with an obscure Linux OS and an older de-bloated Windows system than ever run anything new on my computers or laptops.

As for all that newer "smart" tech, any utility that needs to be online just to use it is not worth jack shit to me. I'll stick with my older utilities.

That's because you are intentionally lazy or illiterate, which is none of my concern. At least I'm not the one having to deal with unnecessary bloat (spyware) from botnets like Windows 10 with their constant routine "updates" (read: botnet theft of all your data). Everything I own is older and yet I have everything needed to function properly without much inconvenience.

Again, I said nothing about video games, I'm not a gamer. I can't say which games work better with whatever hardware, firmware or software. What I DO KNOW is that older operating systems are much better for basic average tasks and if used properly will not take up nearly as much CPU (meaning they can run tasks faster than modern operating systems that are full of bloat). I know this because I keep track of the system threads and processes running in the background of my operating system with computer forensic/analytic software and am very picky what services/processes run in the background.

thats easy as fuck, but also boring as fuck, there is nothing to do these days, that doesn't require some kind of online tech, at least where i live
i dream for the day i can be able to just leave the house & enjoy nature, instead, i am surrounded by a few hundred miles of creosote, sand, and ghettos
>and be able to hang out with friends IRL offline
the only non-online friend i have that isn't my father is an elderly man that i sometimes go to talk guns with
i legit can't see myself being friends with people my age, even a bit above, gen X is the cutoff generation for those who i can relate to, anything less than them makes me feel like i'm talking to a glorified child
i'm not even saying that "i'm so mature lol", its just that most "younger" people tend to have no self control or interest in independent activities, like, no shit a generation of people raised in front of a TV displaying the degeneration of america aren't fully functional adults, they're the progenitor of the ipad kids

>i dont think you know anything

The amount of code an operating system has doesn't matter as long as the code itself can function as the user intends it to. You can have 10,000 lines of code and upgrade the operating system with 8,000 more lines of new code but if the recent 8,000 lines of new code is unnecessary it can compromise the functionality of the original 10,000 lines of code. It's similar to government, you can throw as much taxpayer money as you want to expand government but that doesn't mean you get a better government. I'd much rather have something small of value rather than something massive, over-complicated and burdensome. To me that's convenience.

Believe it or not there was a time where "autism" did not exist, and whatever anyone proposed, theorized or concluded was taken into consideration by others, and then debated, either to be accepted or rejected based on other opinions and conclusions, not of the person but the facts or theory presented by that person. Once upon a time the same went for "conspiracy theories" and if you know where this concludes I rest my case.

I allowed Javascript to run, along with temporary DOM access to discord. I put in a spoofed email account, random user name and faked birth date: typical OPSEC procedure.

It took me to this link: https://discord.com/channels/@me

It simply does not show me anything or allow me to go anywhere. Besides, Discord said their service was for video and audio chat, with text communication enabled. Text is all you would get from me anyway, as I physically removed the microphone and camera from this old laptop years ago [not that WebRTC is even activated for my web browser anyway]. Considering that I refuse to install unknown third party proprietary software on my OS it is best I simply talk here instead. I would not disclose anything else about myself that I wouldn't disclose publicly otherwise anyway.

>do you really expect me to believe you have proper "OPSEC" when you can't even create an account on the most basic platform?

Believe whatever you want. I've talked a lot of shit in the past to a lot of people including hackers over numerous chans and I've never once been doxed or had my system compromised, even when some have tried. It's not like I store anything personal on this old laptop anyway even if it were hacked and to me .sqlite browser cache is considered personal no matter what and that all gets the Gutmann treatment, routinely.

What kind of security is that exactly? They're providing a service that people who take their own personal privacy/security measures can't use? That's just too inconvenient for me, I never said I was a hacker, I just said I use basic OPSEC.

Now instead of worrying about criminals, you also need to be avoid the Gestapo and terrorist bombings that are a response to tyranny.

Americans do not seem to understand that tyranny leads to having a dictator because everyone who is a danger is killed off.

I still have my Sony DVD-VCR combo player that will play DVD or VHS tapes. The only problem is I had to throw away many of my old VHS tapes because, over time, they'd develop what is not too commonly known as "bit rot" due to the quality of the magnetic tape. Overall VHS actually loses quality over the years due to bit rot and eventually this will cause errors and glitches when playing the video cassettes. Similar to having to throw away old audio cassettes from the late 80s due to the horrible quality of sound 30+ years later. DVDs will last a lot longer as long as you keep them protected, stored properly and away from humidity or higher temperature.

Anonymous 12/15/2022 (Thu) 00:03 [Preview] No.44808 del
>>44807
I remember talking to somebody on 8chan years ago about the storage life of a DVD. Apparently DVD can get bit rot too after long-term use. It also depends how they are stored and the environmental conditions they are stored, they should be kept away from heat, humidity and sunlight, protected from dust build-up or from being scratched easily. The brand of DVD might matter too, some brands make cheaper ones that may not last as long. Average lifespan of DVDs appear to be anywhere up to 100 years, according to most websites: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00009195

I recommend getting an 8TB external drive to store your favorite media for backup, not just relying on something that can, and eventually will, wear and tear.

Inverter setup: 2x 2,500 watt inverters and 2x 1,000 watt inverters in the underground bunker. Have several 12V solar trickle chargers for the 12V batteries (not shown in the photo) and one regular 12V trickle charger that can use the power grid on a normal basis to charge the six 12V batteries (seen on top of the inverter rack). This helps run my two deep freezers, a refrigerator plus several LED lights, a laptop and a couple smaller appliances off-grid when need be. When off-grid I simply use the solar trickle chargers to re-power the 12V batteries outside. It's not exactly "old-school" since many preppers have similar set-ups, but it is low tech none-the-less.

I have an old Optiplex 380 with 1 GB RAM that runs Windows Vista on it, debloated from Microsoft's unnecessary crapware with auto-update disabled. It runs just fine, I can rip CDs and DVDs, convert files, run just about anything I need including office software and it hardly takes up any CPU at all, even when running multiple tasks! Super fast and reliable. That technology is almost 20 year old and it still runs just fine!

I've heard about those newer Microsoft operating systems and they suck ass. Slower, bloated to the brim with spyware that wastes up CPU, random forced "auto-updates" which can only be completed if you hook the system up online, user has next to no control over system admin settings.... NO THANKS!! You can keep that newer garbage we would called botnets back in the day. I'll keep my older utilities that actually function the way I desire them to.

I find it's tolerable up to Windows 7, but that's when it stops. At least with the older Windblows operating systems you can somewhat "reverse engineer" and de-bloat them via System Admin tools, registry editor and whatever process manager you use. Which is exactly what I did for my Vista and it works very very well. Uses very little CPU even when I have multiple software programs running. As far as office software? You can get an older pirated Microsoft Office or better yet get the open-sourced LibreOffice for free which will do anything Microsoft Office can do.

LOL, you could simply go to a used computer shop somewhere and find a lot of those old computer towers sitting around waiting to be sold again. I see a lot of later 90s and early 2000s technology sold at flea markets as well, from VCRs to DVD players, old stereo systems with cassette decks and CD shufflers, heck I've seen older shit than that being sold too like record players. Anything you want is still available you just got to go out and look for those still selling it, and make sure if you buy something you test them out first, sometimes you can get ripped off buying old defunct shit. Good Will sells a lot of that older used stuff too and they have extensions and power strips hooked up so you can test all that older tech to make sure it still works. Hint: it doesn't always still work.

Did you know that you didn't ALWAYS have a tiny personal computer in your pocket complete with camera at all times? That you paid attention to the outside world when you were outside? That unless you were watching TV or playing video games you weren't staring into a glowing rectangle and *gasp* possibly talking to real live human beings?

I don't own a smartphone and today I talked to 7 people, 4 of them distant neighbors who came over to my place for a while to chat and have a couple drinks with. Was a very beautiful day outside.

Computers still had games, they were just installed by using floppy or disk drives and the graphics were nothing spectacular or anything remotely like they are today. There were phones but they were not connected to the internet, they were landline phones and you had to use the landline to connect to the internet (so no calling anyone up while using the internet). NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation 1 and the N64 were the main video game systems back then. Many kids started getting hooked on video games during the late 80s and throughout the 90s, although to be fair many still were playing outside and would hang out face to face too. It was sort of a mixed generation of nerds, jocks, goths, juvenile delinquents and average suburban kids.

Yes, true. I switched to Linux. I still have one operating system with Windows 7 but it's been de-bloated using Sys Admin tools and the registry editor (I disabled and removed all the unnecessary crap including all the auto-update shit). Windows 7 works pretty good in classic mode once de-bloated (if you know how to do it properly that is).

You can still use a lot of the older traditional software on Windows 7 too, as long as you don't update the OS and disable the auto-update in the system settings. I still have the old Nero Burning Rom, DVD Shrink, Fre/ac, WinMX, PsSol, WMP with all audio codecs (no strings attached or any registration needed) etc. I have all that older software backed up and can install it anytime I want to, no registration needed. This was what made computers great back in the day, imagine trying to do that with modern proprietary operating systems like Mac or Windows. I assure you they probably mandate you register EVERYTHING today and have backdoor "kill switches" in all the modern spyware I mean software today where they can monitor users and remotely disable anything the companies don't like. They are already doing that for Adobe and Microsoft Office which is why I switched to Libre Office recently.

Those older operating systems worked better and were much more reliable but the downside is lots of modern storage mediums do not have compatible drive software and won't work with an older OS. I would say if someone desires having an older computer, go for it but also have a modern computer so they can use newer storage devices, work with newer formats, download & store more stuff, etc. A table having one old classic PC and another more modern classic laptop side-by-side would be pretty nice.

I can assure you my older laptop with a lightweight Windows 7 works much better than a brand new one with Windows 10 which would force auto-updates daily and brick up from all the invasive bloatware. If you like the newest tech go for it, if not you can sell your older stuff and there would be plenty of people like me willing to buy it up and hold onto it.

I can't imagine many modern file formats working on those older operating systems. Not to mention more modern external hardware. Still, cool retro memories, nice if you have some place to store an older PC and play old games using floppy. Would many sites today work if you connected online and used that old IE browser? Internet was vastly different in those days, many sites still didn't even have images on web pages.
