I'd go with it as long as:

1) User-friendly and no censorship of "wrongthink" aka it's not under control of big tech/govt alphabet gangs.

2) They do not require your phone number or other very personal identification schemes to register to their service.

Otherwise I'll stay on the image boards.

I think there's something similar on mastodon's main site

it doesn't really matter what your home server is per se.

pleroma is a different front end but most servers on pleroma are going to be more akin to image boards than what you're likely to find on mastodon.

that being said, you can check out a few instances. ones based on general interests but you can talk to most servers via most servers but there is probably a decent schism regarding general free speech vs sjw compliance and there's your fair share of schizo types on both sides.

there's some jap servers that post cool shit and are chill

Social media are cancer though, including "alternative" ones like mastodon

I remember you could post almost anything on sites like Youtube or Facebook completely unobstructed (unless it was actually illegal material). Then the government subsidy came rolling into those companies, and eventually they took full control of content moderation, and now, with the demand to know everything about you in order to even register, plus all the shitty takedown policies, not even worth it. Many of the "alternatives" are not much better when it comes to privacy standards. I simply refuse to use any social media service that demands to know who I am. If I can't use a VPN or Tor either, won't even bother visiting those sites.
