The human brain has a tendency to fill in the gaps with information that's available to it - in the same way Avery has assumed the guy she saw at the con was Anonce, upon being shown his photo she could well retroactively assign his face to the vague memory of a person she met briefly 6 months ago.
Memory is fluid and unreliable at the best of times.
