My guess is that it has to do with the fact that gun rights aren't enshrined in your constitution like they are here in the States. So Europeans in general feel a strong connection to hunting and to their hunting rifles, but it doesn't extend out to firearms as a whole since they see it as a sport rather than part of a larger movement.
