The alternative is UEFI I think. I don't know if that makes it shitty.
Personally I'm more a BIOS man. If it can initialize my hardware, it's good enough. UEFI is a bloated mess that takes up millions of bytes just for a flashy UI which you'll see once or twice during your motherboard's life.
Coreboot sounds much better, plus it's open
