It's like the multiple waves of HRE > Prussia > German in America: it's rarely like unique events that caused it and more like they were just poor from things sucking and saved up to leave instead. The only real exception were the German Texans and that was some weird noble group that wanted to make a New Germany in Texas and instantly just gave up and assimilated.
