The idea of him switching his life for a Jew is made up, medical files from the Auschwitz Museum shows that the Germans did numerous x-rays
on Kolbe in the weeks leading up to his death. It showed he had a lung infection of myocharditis from tubercolosis. The Auschwitz Museum confirms these are authentic, they also have death certificates for Kolbe and they claim they are "falsified" both list myocharditis as the cause of Fr Kolbes death. These documents also show Kolbe was not put in Auschwitz for any crime.
