HISTORY LESSON on ORIGIN of The Islamic State part I Thomas Wictor boosted @ quodverum.com this thread by Carlos Osweda:
"Twitter has reached peak stupid today, so let's educate everybody. The Islamic State was founded in 1999 by Jordanian career criminal Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It was called The Organization of Monotheism and Jihad." In 2003, the group went to Iraq and took part in the insurgency. Zarqawi's goal--as explained in a letter--was to ignite a sectarian war between Sunni and Shia Muslims. In 2004, Zarqawi pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda and renamed his group The Organization of Jihad's Base in Mesopotamia. Everyone simply called in al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). In 2005, Ayman al-Zawahiri--al-Qaeda second in command--outlined the strategy of creating a caliphate. In 2006, AQI joined with other jihadists to form the Mujahideen Shura Council (MSC). At the end of the year, MSC united with more jihadists and formed the Mutayibeen Coalition. The next day, they declared themselves the Islamic State of Iraq. The 2007-2008 troop surge by the US inflicted almost fatal damage on the Islamic State in Iraq. By 2008, the group was almost completely destroyed.
