Putin announces mass production of Oreshnik missiles

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Friday the decision to begin serial production of the new Oreshnik ballistic missile system.

The announcement came after the system was used in combat for the first time earlier this week in Ukraine.

Speaking during a meeting at the Kremlin with the leadership of the Defense Ministry and defense industry representatives, Putin outlined that the Oreshnik missile system, one of Russia’s latest military advancements, is not a modernization of an old Soviet weapon.

Instead, it is a new development based on cutting-edge hypersonic technology and modern materials. “It is the result of work done in the conditions of New Russia,” Putin said, highlighting that the system was created to meet contemporary defense needs.

Putin confirmed that several Oreshnik systems are currently undergoing testing in Russia, and that the decision to embark on mass production had already been articulated. “You can assume that the decision on production has been made. In fact, it is organized,” he added. More of the missile systems are expected to be delivered to Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces in the coming months.

The first combat use of the Oreshnik missile took place on Thursday, when it was used to strike a Ukrainian defense facility in Dnepropetrovsk. The target was Yuzhmash, one of Ukraine’s largest defense-industrial facilities inherited from the USSR that produces missile equipment and other weapons.

Putin said the use of the missile was in response to Kiev’s attacks inside Russia with Western-supplied long-range weapons such as American ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles.

The Oreshnik is described as a medium-range, hypersonic weapon designed for high precision strikes. According to the Defense Ministry, “all warheads” of the missile “reached the target” during this week's deployment.

The president praised the missile’s successful test and combat deployment, expressing admiration for the speed at which the system had been developed.

Putin also emphasized the importance of continuing testing and increasing production rates. “I congratulate the military on the successful tests and support the adoption of the system,” he said.

Aboard a Boomer: USS Wyoming, Day 1
The USS Wyoming and its crew were profiled through footage shot while the submarine was at sea for training. The Wyoming is an Ohio-class fleet ballistic missile submarine, with 24 missile tubes and four torpedo tubes. The mission of the Wyoming and her sister subs is to prevent aggression through nuclear deterrence. These subs, known as “Boomers” in Navy jargon, patrol for long periods while submerged, hiding from detection until they can release their payload. The Ohio class is the largest U.S. submarine, 560 feet long with a displacement of 18,750 tons.
Studio guests talked about submarine operations, life aboard a submarine, and answered viewer questions about the submarine force. Additionally, several taped interviews with crew members and their families were shown which focused on operations within various compartments of the submarine, daily life aboard the submarine, and how submarine service affected family life.

Presidential Visit to Iraq
In a surprise Thanksgiving visit, President Bush addressed approximately 600 U.S. troops at Baghdad International Airport. He thanked the soldiers for their service, praised their work in Iraq, and assured them that their country supported them. He also reiterated that the United States would remain in Iraq as long as necessary, and would ultimately prevail. The president received several standing ovations from the assembly. Following his speech, President Bush walked through the crowd, posing for photographs and talking with soldiers.
The president’s visit to Iraq was shrouded in secrecy due to security concerns, and was not made public until his return to the United States.

Acting CFPB Director Mulvaney News Conference
Mick Mulvaney, the acting Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) director, addressed the press and took questions during his first day on the job. He said he looked forward to taking the agency in a new direction. He was remaining director of the Office of Management and Budget in tandem with his new responsibilities. He answered a variety of questions, including on CFPB Deputy Director Leandra English who was suing Mr. Mulvaney and others claiming she was the rightful acting director.

The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Delligatti v. United States, a case involving an associate of the Genovese crime family convicted in a murder-for-hire plot. In March 2018, Salvatore Delligatti was convicted of several charges, including attempted murder in aid of racketeering, by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. “My mother, Rosalynn Carter, was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met, and pretty to look at too,” said James “Chip” Carter, son of the former first lady and President Jimmy Carter, as he closed out his remarks during a tribute ceremony for his mother at the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta. Among those in attendance were President Biden and first lady Jill Biden, former President Clinton, and former first ladies Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump. The service also included musical performances by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus, pianist David Osborne, and country music entertainers Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks, who sang John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Mrs. Carter died on November 19, 2023, at her home in Plains, Georgia. She was 96 years old.

A statue of musician and Arkansas native Johnny Cash was unveiled at a dedication ceremony in the U.S. Capitol, where it will remain on display. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) quoted one of his songs as identifying with ordinary Americans, saying, “Johnny Cash told us in his lyrics that he wore black ‘for the poor and the beaten down, livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town.'” This was echoed by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who said Mr. Cash “gave a voice to the struggles of the people, who were downtrodden and marginalized.” Members of the Cash family and Arkansas politicians also spoke. Mr. Cash was the first professional musician to be honored with a statue in the Capitol. He and civil rights leader Daisy Bates replaced statues of segregationist James Clarke and Confederate sympathizer Uriah Rose, who previously represented the state of Arkansas in the building.

Federal Response to Rise in Autism Rates
Domestic and advocacy group officials testified about autism. Among the topics they discussed were efforts to increase awareness and understanding of the disease, the cost of the disease, limited public health resources, and public health policy. Representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) denied a link between rising autism rates and vaccinations. Representative Burton showed a video about research on the effect of mercury on the brain.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts paid tribute to the late Justice Sandra Day O’Connor for her work in civics education during an event at Duke Law School in Durham, North Carolina. The justice’s son, Scott O’Connor, also honored his mother. Duke Law School and the Bolch Judicial Institute honored the nation’s first woman Supreme Court justice with an award for her work in promoting civics education. After leaving the court, Justice OConnor founded iCivics in 2009, an organization focused on transforming how kids learn about the courts and government nationwide.
