Many people. Before the crisis of faith, Christianism was effectively a mass religious system that could offer that to anyone who went to church regularly. This is why it was so widespread and huge.
But as our cognitions developed and the noosphere got flooded with materialistic science, that system doesn't work anymore and we returned to need more complex esoteric initiation systems (or true mystic experience paths) to have the same effects.
