When the net of the buffs/debuffs is negative, the default becomes negative so it gets harder to flip it. Same for when its positive.
This is why when you get a temporary buff like consumption or porn or drugs you get that maniac hype only to have a crash after.
Happiness vs "Joy" is just net positive vs temporary buffs.
