Many Panetones are disgusting. Dry, full of candied fruits that taste horrible, etc...

You want one that is moist, strings apart, mostly with raisins and with a noticeable fermented flavor. Its uniquely a type of cake that uses bread fermentation instead of chemical.
Also, it needs the correct essence that is a mix of vanilla and orange.

I have no idea if the US fruitcake is anything close to that.
