The spiral will force you towards the middle and the people around you will, through social interactions, create situations where you can move up. It's not just "technology", but also functions as an antenna channelling the frequencies of higher gods. They'll give hints as needed, but even without this you would end up in the middle in a "pool of virtue" which inevitably would have to be turned into gong and force you up as time progresses.
