I was also into this idea of VR back in the 90s when you had to wear a helmet and they cost too much and 3D was very basic. But I soon forgot about this because I found other ways to "visit other worlds" like reading fantasy novels. Sounds silly perhaps but it took a certain threshold breaking to open up this mindset where I could "accept" the idea of reading stories about fantasy worlds.
I used to only read pic related when growing up; they're semi-mystery novels set in WW2. Some of them are pretty deep into conspiracy stuff, but it isn't fantasy.

I didn't consider this before, nowadays the "Lord of the Rings" and other books were filmed and popularized so the idea is accepted as entertainment, but this just wasn't how I recall seeing and understanding things. "Fairy tales are for kids" was the common concept.
I guess some marketing team realized they were missing out on this market so they had Lord of the Rings filmed by a splatter film director, since zombies are already accepted in the horror genre. It's playing on the concept that other worlds are horror however and that's negative, that isn't what fantasy is about.
