yes, I only played old psp titles for few hours, there's no need to play old ones to get into mhw, it's way above past titles, tho it does have some shitty additions like clutch claw
it's not really mmo, sessions are 16 ppl max, hunts are 4 ppl max but they're fun. It's generally agreed that people solo most of the "campaign" stuff and if they want to challenge themselves endgame stuff too, but as long as you don't cart over and over while coop you will be fine hunting with other people.
Does online add anything? It's fun, I definitelly would probably not bother with most of endgame if not for it, I did solo both mhw and iceborne though and it was fun.

Hint: if you do end up getting it, don't use defender gear
