An attempt to revive the old Best Emma threads from 8chan and the subsequent bunkers.
Bascially these threads were a place to recommend films, TV shows, post half-assed/wanna-be pseudo-intellectual reviews, and funpost. Often we would end up going back to discussing the кино of Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Jean Rollin, and Nicolas Winding Refn, and 1980s slashers and horror, but anything goes.

Some films I have on my backlog and plan to get around to ASAP:

Just came out, and made by the writer/director who made the ultraviolent and incredibly stylish Bliss (2019). I noticed the poster for Bliss in the background in a still from this film.

Another interesting film I’ve come across by happy accident: Valerie a týden divů/Valerie and Her Week of Wonders from 1970 is Czechoslovak surrealist fantasy horror film directed by Jaromil Jireš, based on the 1935 novel of the same name by Vítězslav Nezval. Seen the film described as “a surreal polychrome coming-of-age vampire costume drama”.

Raw Deal looks like the only movie out of this bunch I'd watch. Do not enjoy slasher gore films, a little violence is ok as long as it is necessary for the script and story line.

As long as the brutality and the gore is practical and matches the tone of the film I am all for it. There are films that rely too much on its gore, like the Japanese Guinea Pig series, and Tumbling Doll of Flesh (1998).
Of course I am biased, since my all-time favourite filmmaker is Lucio Fulci, known as the master of the macabre and the godfather of gore. I think Fulci always achieved a perfect balance of atmosphere to go with the extreme brutality. The Gates of Hell trilogy in particular is a true masterpiece – a perfect blend of atmosphere and insane brutality.

His gialli films hardly have any brutal deaths in them, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971), Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972), and The Psychic (1977) are all beautiful examples of the giallo film and are well-worth a watch to anyone who likes the genre. Murder Rock: Dancing Death (1984) is a stylish blend of gillo and dance.
It was not until his first foray into horror with Zombie aka Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979) that he began including great practical gore effects. I suppose I am in the minority since I greatly enjoy even his later films, Ænigma (1987) and Demonia (1990).

As for 1980s action, I would suggest Lamberto Bava’s (son of Mario Bava) Blastfighter (1984), Black Moon Rising (1986), and the entire filmography of Andy Sidaris. Sidaris’ films are always a blast, no gore, just action and a cast of Playboy Playmates.

Two new (largely?) overlooked action films from the late 1980s/early 1990s.
Cyborg with Van Damme reminds me a lot of the Italian-produced 2019: After the Fall of New York (trailer: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=pksZ3_RdAEc) with Michael Sopkiw & George Eastman, and that was a blend of Mad Max & Escape from New York.

I did watch Hard Ticket to Hawaii a while back and forgot to mention it lol, pretty entertaining flick and those babes were hot (love that classic 80s hairstyle)!

Hard Ticket to Hawaii is a total blast. Seen all twelve in the L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies series by Sidaris, and they are all enjoyable and entertaining action/adventure films with Playboy Play Mates and models. Roberta Vasquez and Julie Strain show up in the sequels, so does Pat Morita in Do or Die (1991), and Roger Moore’s son, R. J. Moore in Fit to Kill (1993).

Working my way through Miami Vice at the moment, and that series satisfies my love of the 1980s, the fashions, the cars, the music, the upbeat vibe, and the women. A shame Sidaris never directed an episode of the show, his keen eye for beautiful women and action would be a perfect fit for the show, even if he had to tone it down for TV.
