THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY sheep 09/02/2024 (Mon) 04:54 [Preview] No. 475 [Reply] [Last 50 Posts]
THE COLLECT
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EPISTLE Galatians 5. 16
I SAY then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

THE GOSPEL. S. LUKE 17. 11
AND it came to pass, as Jesus went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: and they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? there are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

Paul was a first century christian. He wrote a letter to the church in Galatia, which is modern day central and southern Turkey. He wrote this in 50 AD:

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5)

Being led by the Spirit may seem like a mystery, it's mystical. But Paul demystifies it, and tells us exactly what it means. When we have received the holy Spirit, what it means to walk in the Spirit. But how can we walk in the Spirit without the Spirit? We cannot. One can hardly accomplish it with the Spirit in them, because their flesh fights against it, all their sinful flesh that they've built up fights against the new birth and new man. But unless you see the fruit of the Spirit, do not be deceived; salvation comes with the receiving of the holy Spirit: not my opinion, not my choice of how reality works, this is just how it is by God's own words, His will, His way. One can be a very nice person, one can worship God, and one can say he excretes joy and love and peace and temperance (though probably doesn't) and we can say we have no wrath or hatred or uncleanness or lasciviousness in us, and we don't emulate. Again, any honest person knows how short they fall. But we cannot be our saviours.

When we have received the holy Spirit, that is a seed planet, God likes the whole idea of seeds, which is why it's so part of our world. When the holy Spirit enters into a believer in experience, that seed planted cannot be stopped, it will crush your flesh, it will grow despite ourselves. We cannot stop it. Jesus is going to bring you into fellowship no matter how dumb we are. By my own devices I will be an evil wicked person, a faithless selfish person. People think they're good, that's why they hate God and His Christ. There was a woman, 16, she sold nudes of herself and she said, Well I'm not as bad as the people who buy my nudes! Or of course there's men who watch porn and then think prostitutes are worse than them. In other words, people stand on ant hills and then say, See I'm higher than they! Meanwhile God's goodness is higher than outerspace. And he's looking down on two specks, one of which is on top of an even smaller speck. Humans are not good, so what? humans love the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but Jesus wants us to take from the tree of life. And life is meant to be exactly what Paul describes as walking in the Spirit, and to walk in the flesh is death, because our flesh will eventually perish in its corruption and we will be given new bodies. Your body did not come from worms and/or sea sponges having sex 600 million years ago. We have our body and will be given a new one, whether it is for good or bad.
Goodness is fundamental, everyone knows what it is, it's just a matter of whether they want it or not. And the difference between a saved believer and the non-believer is that a disciple of Jesus wants all the goodness, whereas the natural man wants some goodness, But let me have a little bit of my badness on the side. Let me have my bit of adultery, It'll all work out anyway because I'm still not that bad, I have some goodness overall and I'm above these other sinners! Ant hill mindset. That's not how salvation works. But salvation is through Christ and understanding that He alone is the payment for sin and understanding that, we ask and receive the holy Spirit. And we walk in the Spirit. We begin to understand by the Spirit truly God's will and how we should live. And just because when we receive the Spirit that doesn't mean we don't have our flesh anymore, Paul says, Your flesh will war against the new nature from God. The naturally man thinks he has a good and bad nature but he only has one nature, the only other nature comes from God and it is beyond the knowledge of good and evil, it is life, eternal. Now that when we walk in the Spirit if we make a mistake it is a mistake, we do not do evil because we think it's okay or I'm good enough. We never stop walking, never stop ascending. We can't walk in both paths willingly. We have to choose a lane, because the middle ground and lower ground are all going to hell. And those that choose life receive life. Now we make our decision, I choose God. I'm not going to hell because I'm a pervert and hateful and sexist, my flesh might be built on all those things, but I will not let the flesh win. one has to understand who he is. He is not just his body, we have consciousness which interfaces through our brain. You damage your brain then your consciousness is going to struggle to do as you would, as Paul says. And what we want to do when we are given the gift of the Spirit is to please God and follow Him.

What Paul means by if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. The word Torah, means Law. When Jesus says he's come to fulfil the Law and Prophets (Matthew 5), he means the writings of the Torah and the writings of the Prophets. The Torah is just the first five books of the Bible. It's the foundation of what Israel was to be. But of course God's ultimate plan is not 15th century BC Israel, it is the lost Paradise restored. Israel was the vessel through which the seed of the Saviour would come as He promised Abraham. The Torah has about 613 commandments for Israel; as Paul says, christians are not under any of them, why? because if ye are led by the Spirit, the commandments are second place. We understand them through proper eyes. Again robots don't understand the Bible.

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. (Romans 3)

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: from which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. (I Timothy 1)

The difference between the Law and the Spirit is the difference between telling your child to brush his teeth and your child being fully grown knowing to brush his teeth. If you're an adult and don't know to brush your teeth you say something is wrong with him. And many people are grown up and yet don't recognise the Law, much less the Spirit. They need to be told not to cast slurs on others. They need to be told not to steal.

So if you're led by the Spirit and not the law does that mean you can murder and steal and commit adultery? Such a question fundamentally does not understand the New Covenant. If you are born again you will have new desires and not want to do these things and you will be forced and sanctified to walk in God's ways throughout your life. You grieve the Spirit when you do wrong and thank Jesus I love You for that.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. (Psalm 23)

Now keeping the Law is the agreement that Israel made with God on Mt. Sinai. They agreed to keep the ten commandments and all the other commandments. Israel did. No one you ever meet in your life has ever agreed to do that, even modern Jews. Because that offer is no longer available. God had promised a new covenant to Israel, which finally came to pass not through Moses but Jesus. A greater covenant.

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: but this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. (Jeremiah 31)

In the Third year of Jesus' public ministry (30 AD):

And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. (Luke 17)

Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans. Samaritans were looked down on because, while being Jews, they were ethnically mixed with Assyrians; and were not as religiously informed. However these ten lepers, it's safe to assume some were Jews, Luke and Jesus point out the Samaritan. Therefore while Jews and Samaritans would not walk with one another, when you become a leper that rule suddenly changes. Lepers weren't allowed in cities, so they had to live on their own in their little groups on the outside; and only then did the racial divide suddenly become useless. Ethnicity isn't going to matter on judgement day. It doesn't matter when we're covered in sin: the same as everyone else.
Jesus never said He'd cleanse the lepers, He only told them to go show themselves to the priests. By faith they went and were healed. Jesus never said stop and come back and give thanks. But the one who did is greatest. God isn't interested in robots. We get that with people who don't understand how to read the Bible, they don't read it in a personal living way but in some dry mechanical dead way. God is the God of the living. Now we have been told, thank you Jesus, take the time to thank Jesus, and don't just follow commandments for the sake of religion. But we need a relationship with the Son of God.
